Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy has launched a cannabis brand called BRKFST in partnership with Jokes Up Ice Kream, a Los Angeles, California dispensary.

The brand launch, which coincided with Miami Carnival, started with a pop up shop on Thursday, Oct. 6 and then followed by brunch at a diner in South Beach. There was also another pop up shop at the dispensary in Los Angeles on Saturday (Oct. 15).

The name BRKFST was inspired by the Nigerian native's hit song “Last Last.” The lyrics "Na everybody go chop breakfast" is a Nigerian slang which means everyone will definitely experience pain or heartbreak. He also adds "I need igbo and shayo (shayo)" meaning he needs igbo which is weed and shayo which is alcohol, to heal his emotional wounds.

"Last Last" became Burna Boy's first No. 1 on the Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart. It was the first single released from his latest album, “Love, Damini,” which was released on July 8th, 2022. The track samples elements of Toni Braxton’s 2000 hit record “He Wasn’t Man Enough.”

On Friday, Oct. 7, Burna Boy became the first Afrobeats artist to headline Tipsy Musical Festival at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. The Caribbean festival featured performances by Machel Montana, Skinny Fabulous, Teejay, Voice, Hypasounds, and more. His fans at the event had the opportunity to get first dibs on BRKFST merchandise.

Burna Boy has always been vocal about smoking weed. In an interview with Home Grown Radio last year, he stated that everyone in Nigeria smokes weed but they are hypocritical about it. “It’s not a zero-tolerance. It’s like everybody does it, but nobody wants to be the one that is seen with it. It’s just kind of hypocritical out there. Everybody smokes weed,” he said.

Cannabis is illegal in Nigeria.
