It has been five years since the tragic death of Eric Garner, which was recorded on video after being placed in a banned chokehold by Daniel Pantaleo. It was announced that Pantaleo has been fired from the NYPD.
NYPD police commissioner James O’Neill made the announcement after an administrative judge suggested that Pantaleo be fired after the confrontation between him and Garner during an arrest of selling untaxed cigarettes.
As reported by The Guardian, last month the US justice department refused to indict Pantaleo on federal civil rights charges meaning that he would face no criminal proceedings.
Since the July 17th,2014 incident, Pantaleo remained employed with the NYPD. Many took to social media to express their feelings about this decision. See posts below.
This is the right decision, but we are still a very long way from achieving justice for Eric Garner’s family and countless others who have lost loved ones to police violence. We must fundamentally transform our criminal justice system at every level. https://t.co/1YVNtpNfrj
It’s about damn time. https://t.co/czgDwdyBKv
The fact that it took 5 years, international activism, and multiple investigations to get Daniel Pantaleo fired for killing Eric Garner ON VIDEO with a banned chokehold says everything we need to know about the value of Black life in America.
