In the latest update, South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit in the Caribbean Sea was felt by South Florida as well.

It didn’t appear to cause any deaths or major damage, but as a precaution, officials in high-risk areas evacuated.

Luckily as of now, there haven’t been any reports of death or major damages in any of the shakes. It does raise a little concern for Florida since they usually don’t experience earthquakes. According to the report:

“Florida rarely feels such tremors because it’s not near any plate boundaries, unlike, say, California.

There were two major reasons this one was felt in Florida, said Falk Amelung, professor of marine geology and geophysics at the University of Miami. First, it was strong. Second, it took place at a point on the Caribbean plate, which follows roughly the shape of the Caribbean Sea, that comes closest to Florida.”

Natural disasters are always horrible especially since things are out of a human’s control!

Several news sources report that a 7.3 earthquake hit Jamaica and surrounding islands like south Cuba and the Cayman Islands have been impacted.

ABC reports, “It was centered about 78 miles north-northwest of Lucea, Jamaica, and hit at 2:10 p.m. local time Tuesday. The epicenter was a relatively shallow 6 miles beneath the surface.”

It’s unclear if there any damages or injuries.
